Our Story

Newfoundland and Labrador is the youngest province of Canada, situated at the most easterly edge of North America. The Vikings settled here over 1000 years ago. We are home to the oldest European Settlement in North America together with the oldest city, St. John's. This is a land rich in history, stunning coastlines, breaching whales, icebergs and FAIRIES.

Belief in fairies is still strong in many parts of Newfoundland and Labrador. The environment of our province is very similar to the environment from which our ancestors left; making it easy for our forefathers to adjust to their new surroundings and to the FAIRIES.

Many, if not all European countries have an ancient and, in some cases, a modern belief in other classes of beings distinct from us humans. One such non-human entity is the fairy.

Stories about fairies come from many European countries. Some of these countries include: England, Scotland, Whales, Ireland, Germany, Scandinavia, Sweden, Denmark and Norway, just to name a few.

The Fairy Investigation Society was founded in 1927. Some of its more famous members included Walt Disney, Lord Dowding, Edward Gardner, Walter Starkie and Daphne Charters.

In 1955 Marjorie Johnson, secretary of the society and the celebrated Scottish folklorist, Alasdair Alpin MacGregor began a survey of modern fairy belief. A fairy census  conducted in 1955/1956 was published in 2014. A new census of all those who have had a fairy experience began in 2015. Its results will be published online.
